Door-to-Door Outreach

- in which we visit villagers in their own homes and share more about health with them -

Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. This is the motivation behind our quarterly door-to-door health education. To date, we have covered topics such as nutrition, child health, maternal health, acute and chronic illness and musculoskeletal problems. We assess the baseline understanding of each topic and design each brochure accordingly. The preparation process may seem long, but one forgets the process upon seeing villagers who warmly welcome us and attentively listen to our sharing. Even though the outcome measurement is not always straight forward, we know that education is the foundation to inspiring change and thus invest a large amount of our efforts into this aspect of Project Daya.

Training Trainers

- in which we encourage sustainability by training the locals themselves -

We recognise that our time there is very limited; hence, what better way to make change sustainable than to involve the locals themselves? We work closely with Peduli Bangsa - a local NGO, as well as the Posyandu Ladies - a group of enthusiastic ladies in charge of running monthly health screenings in the village. It is definitely a humbling and enriching experience as we share and exchange our materials, insights and experiences. We conduct focused group discussions and simulations with our local partners; and they share their experiences and cultural insights with us. Through this, we hope to make our educational efforts more sustainable and long-lasting.

Children's Programmes

- in which we create a fun learning environment for the children in the village -

The children are the future. It is a joy to not just play with them, but also to teach them through fun and games. We cover a few topics such as dental hygiene, nutrition as well as English. We use a variety of methods to teach them - skit, games, hands-on activities, and songs. While it is difficult to assess how much of a long-term impact we make, it is always heart-warming to see the children enthusiastically welcome us each time. Many of them can also remember our songs and some of them even remember our names!
